What you become

Become the person who improves how work gets done.

Week one In his Career Action Plan

“…fixing processes instead of working around them.”

John writes where he wants to be within 12 months: working as an improvement coordinator, fixing processes instead of working around them

End of Digital In his Career Portfolio

Designed, built and tested an AI enquiry assistant.

His portfolio item: an AI enquiry assistant linked to a checked CRM follow-up workflow
“One failed: a returning client created a second contact and a new Lead, because my check matched on email only. I changed it to match the organisation as well, re-ran the test and it passed.”

You will learn how to:

  • Identify workplace problems worth solving
  • Use AI and digital tools responsibly
  • Improve systems, workflows and customer experiences
  • Analyse information and make better decisions
  • Communicate recommendations clearly
  • Support people through change
  • Measure workplace and business value

Immersive Workplace Learning

Where learning becomes real.

Next Horizon is EduSmart’s complete Australian business simulation, and it is what we mean by Immersive Workplace Learning. You join a realistic national organisation of around 95 people, work across six connected departments and a head office, and contribute to one organisation-wide transformation.

Your role inside Next Horizon is part of the learning experience. It is not an offer of paid employment.

The central challenge

Can Next Horizon improve itself before advising others?

Learners contribute to three connected workstreams:

  1. 1

    Transform Next Horizon

  2. 2

    Prove the AI investment

  3. 3

    Prepare the external AI practice

You choose one approved client, then apply what you have learned to that client case by identifying opportunities, reviewing evidence and recommending what should happen next.

Inside Next Horizon: one department, start to finishDemonstration learner

Join a department with a director and targets to hit.

Each department has its own practical project, but every project contributes to the same organisation-wide transformation.

Next Horizon is a national transformation organisation with:

  • Around 95 employees
  • Six connected departments
  • A national hybrid workforce
  • Realistic systems and business challenges
  • A Future Ready Team in Head Office
  • Internal improvement priorities
  • A proposed AI and automation investment
  • A future external AI transformation practice

It has its own intranet, with dashboards, policies, an org chart and 95 staff. You work with its numbers, not a textbook’s.

Employers value people who can understand how a business works across departments, not only complete tasks inside one narrow role.

Next Horizon helps learners practise:

  • Working with realistic information
  • Making decisions with evidence
  • Improving systems
  • Communicating across teams
  • Managing risk
  • Measuring value
  • Presenting recommendations

Start by applying for your Next Horizon role

Your Learning Journey begins with an application to join the Next Horizon Transformation Office in an immersive AI and digital transformation role.

As part of the application, EduSmart also reviews your:

  • Program suitability
  • language, literacy and numeracy readiness
  • digital readiness
  • learner support needs

If you are suitable to proceed, the next step is formal EduSmart enrolment and RTO acceptance.

Next Horizon roles are part of the EduSmart learning environment and are not paid employment.

  1. Developing
  2. Applying
  3. Proficient
  4. Leading

Your skills are tracked as you apply them across the Learning Journey and build evidence of increasing capability.

The 12 areas

Using AI on real tasks, and checking what it produces before anyone relies on it.

At work

Drafting, summarising and sorting information faster, with the checks that stop an AI error reaching a client.

Evidence you could show

A working prompt set, and the task timed before and after, with the errors you caught.

Working in the shared tools your team already uses, so work moves cleanly between people.

At work

Shared spaces, folders and naming that let a colleague pick up your work without asking where it is.

Evidence you could show

The shared workspace you set up, and a count of repeat requests before and after.

Handling information and tools the way your workplace, and the law, expect.

At work

Knowing what can go into an AI tool, de-identifying data for testing, and checking a tool’s privacy terms first.

Evidence you could show

A data inventory for your project, and the safe-handling rules you wrote for it.

Writing and presenting for the people who have to act on your work.

At work

Briefs, reports and recommendations a manager can read once and decide on.

Evidence you could show

A decision brief, and a record of what your audience asked and decided.

Finding the real problem before fixing anything, then testing the fix on real work.

At work

Taking a recurring problem through the 5D Improvement Cycle instead of patching it again.

Evidence you could show

A written problem statement, and a recurrence count weeks after the change.

Gathering the information a decision needs, and showing how it changes the choice.

At work

Checking an AI summary against the underlying data before it shapes a decision.

Evidence you could show

An evidence table with sources and dates, and a short statement of the choice it supports.

Seeing how work really moves, and removing the waits and handovers that slow it.

At work

Mapping a process, finding where jobs sit waiting, and changing one step so the whole flow speeds up.

Evidence you could show

A process map, and one job timed end to end before and after.

Bringing people with you when the way they work changes.

At work

Asking the people affected before the change, and checking weeks later that the new way has stuck.

Evidence you could show

Consultation notes, and a take-up count after the change.

Putting a figure on what an improvement saves or gains, with working someone else can check.

At work

Baselines, assumptions and a value calculation a manager can challenge line by line.

Evidence you could show

Baseline figures and the value calculation, with every assumption written out.

Reducing the materials, energy, time and waste a process uses.

At work

Measuring what a process consumes, redesigning one step, and measuring again.

Evidence you could show

A before-and-after resource reading, and the trade-off you accepted.

Naming what could go wrong with a change, and putting controls in before go-live.

At work

A risk register with owners, and a test that breaks the process on purpose to see whether a control catches it.

Evidence you could show

A risk register, and the result of a failure rehearsal.

Making an improvement hold after you step away, and naming the next one.

At work

Measuring the result against the target, updating the way of working, and handing it over.

Evidence you could show

The result against target, and a handover pack someone else can run.

Screens from Next Horizon and My Career Hub, shown with John Goodman, a demonstration learner.

The method

A method you can use in any workplace.

The 5D Improvement Cycle runs through every department. Choose a step to see what it means and where you use it.

1

Discover

Understand what is happening now.

1 Discover

What it means Look at the work as it really happens, through its records, people and systems, before deciding what is wrong.

In the course In Digital Solutions & AI you follow one client enquiry from first contact to follow-up, stage by stage.

2

Define

Identify the real problem and desired result.

2 Define

What it means Pin down the problem worth solving, and the result that would count as fixed.

In the course You check whether that enquiry is typical against a sample of 15, then write what goes wrong and what it costs.

3

Design

Compare options and plan what could work better.

3 Design

What it means Weigh the options and plan the change before anything is built.

In the course You plan the workflow in plain English first: what starts it, what happens next, and the checks that stop a duplicate.

4

Deliver

Build, test or implement the improvement.

4 Deliver

What it means Build it, test it on real cases, and put it into practice.

In the course You build the enquiry assistant and the CRM workflow, run the test scenarios and correct what fails.

5

Develop

Measure the value, capture the lessons and identify what happens next.

5 Develop

What it means Measure what the change is worth, record what you learned, and name the next improvement.

In the course You measure the value, hand the work over, and shape the next step as an investment opportunity.

The first Digital Solutions and AI task: follow the Bluepeak enquiry, with Garth Walker's brief
Your project inDigital Solutions & AI

Next Horizon department · Director: Garth Walker

Improve work with AI, systems and automation.

A client enquiry goes missing somewhere between the website, the inbox and the CRM. You find out why, build the fix, and prove it works.

Sound familiar?

  • The same enquiry details typed in two or three times.
  • Nobody sure who follows up, or by when.
  • AI answers that sound right but have never been checked against the source.

What you’ll do, and how

You follow one enquiry from first contact to follow-up and check 15 more to see whether it is typical. Then you build an AI enquiry assistant that answers only from approved information, and a CRM workflow that captures the details once, acknowledges the client and gives every follow-up an owner and a date. You test it, correct it and measure what it saves.

  • Current-process map
  • 15-enquiry analysis
  • AI enquiry assistant
  • CRM follow-up workflow
  • Test and correction record
  • Value summary and recommendation

Why it’s simple to work through

Every task shows how long it takes and whether it works on a phone. The records you need are already there, Garth briefs each step, and My Work Assistant shows your next task when you are stuck.

Useful now, and later

Most workplaces lose time to enquiries and re-keyed details. The same map, build, test and measure steps work on your own team’s enquiries, so the method comes to work with you.

Who it impresses

  • Service businesses that run on enquiries
  • Teams moving onto a CRM
  • Customer service and operations managers
  • Anyone weighing up AI tools

What lasts The skills, evidence towards BSBTEC403 and BSBDAT501 where it meets the formal requirements, and a portfolio entry that shows an employer your process and your result, step by step.

Next Horizon department · Director: Megan Thompson

Improve communication, customer experience and conversion.

Some proposals are won, some are lost, and some stall with no decision. You find out why, and fix how the business talks to the clients it wants to win.

Sound familiar?

  • Enquiries that go quiet after the first reply.
  • Every person explaining the service a different way.
  • Follow-up that depends on who remembers.

What you’ll do, and how

You map how a client moves from first enquiry to a decision, set a baseline, and write a one-page client communication protocol. Then you build a qualification form and a follow-up sequence in a CRM, test them against real scenarios, including one AI-assisted proposal example, and recommend what to change.

  • Customer experience map
  • Client communication protocol
  • Service messages and calls to action
  • Qualification form and follow-up sequence
  • Scenario test
  • Value recommendation

Why it’s simple to work through

The evidence is gathered for you: the proposals, the accounts and the messages. Two short Next Horizon documents set the standard, and every task shows how long it takes.

Useful now, and later

Every business wants more of its enquiries to become clients. A clear protocol and a follow-up sequence are things you can put in front of your own manager straight away.

Who it impresses

  • Sales and business development teams
  • Professional services firms
  • Customer experience and marketing roles
  • Small businesses growing their client base

What lasts Evidence towards BSBXCM501 and BSBCRT511 where it meets the formal requirements, and a before-and-after you can show any employer that sells to clients.

Reduce delay, confusion and repeated work.

A signed job gets lost between sales and delivery. You follow the handover stop by stop, find where information drops out, and rebuild it so it holds.

Sound familiar?

  • Work that stalls while someone chases the details.
  • The same client information re-entered by each team.
  • A procedure on paper that nobody follows.

What you’ll do, and how

You trace the sales-to-delivery handover through every stop, rewrite the handover procedure and build a handover record in a CRM. Then you test it with a project manager and measure the time and capacity it frees up.

  • Handover map
  • Rewritten procedure
  • Handover record
  • Test run
  • Time and capacity summary
  • Recommendation

Why it’s simple to work through

You get your own numbered list of steps and a plan for each fortnight. The procedure’s wording sits beside the evidence at every stop, and the page does the arithmetic for you.

Useful now, and later

Handovers break wherever work passes between teams. Fixing one is the kind of improvement a manager notices in the first week.

Who it impresses

  • Service and field businesses
  • Construction and project teams
  • Operations and delivery managers
  • Any team that hands work over

What lasts Evidence towards BSBTEC404 and BSBOPS501 where it meets the formal requirements, and a worked improvement you can repeat on your own team’s handovers.

Help people succeed through workplace change.

Next Horizon is hiring for a role it has never had before. You design how it finds, chooses and welcomes that person.

Sound familiar?

  • Job ads copied from the last one.
  • New starters left to work it out in their first month.
  • Uncertainty about where AI belongs in hiring.

What you’ll do, and how

You review what the role needs against what the team already has, improve the position description and job ad, build a selection sheet and a recruitment process in a CRM, and plan onboarding from before day one to day 30. Then you test it with supplied candidates and new-starter scenarios.

  • Role needs review
  • Position description and job ad
  • Interview and selection sheet
  • Recruitment process in a CRM
  • 30-day onboarding plan
  • Test record

Why it’s simple to work through

Every input is supplied, from the role brief to the candidates, so your time goes on the decisions. AI never picks the candidate: you learn where it helps and where people must decide.

Useful now, and later

Most managers hire and onboard without a system. A clear position description and a 30-day plan are ready for the next time your team takes someone on.

Who it impresses

  • HR and people teams
  • Team leaders who hire
  • Growing small businesses
  • Organisations rolling out new technology

What lasts Evidence towards BSBHRM525 where it meets the formal requirements, and a recruitment and onboarding approach you can show an employer and use again.

Next Horizon department · Director: Yumi Nakamura

Make workplace transformation safer and more trusted.

New AI tools and old habits create risks nobody has written down. You find them, put controls in place, and check that the controls work.

Sound familiar?

  • Work information pasted into AI tools with no rule to follow.
  • A policy nobody has read since it was written.
  • No clear way to report an incident.

What you’ll do, and how

You brief the business on current threats, read a staff awareness survey, update the cyber and responsible AI policy with a quick reference, and build an incident reporting workflow and a risk register with one treatment put in place. Then you test it against four scenarios.

  • Threat and risk brief
  • Awareness baseline
  • Staff training updates
  • Policy and quick reference
  • Incident reporting workflow
  • Risk register

Why it’s simple to work through

The survey results and the business context are supplied, the Employee Hub start takes about 20 minutes, and the Course Assistant answers questions as you go.

Useful now, and later

Every organisation using AI needs someone who can say what is safe and show why. That is a conversation you can start at work this week.

Who it impresses

  • Organisations adopting AI tools
  • Health, finance and other regulated sectors
  • Compliance, risk and governance roles
  • IT and operations managers

What lasts Evidence towards BSBXCS402 and BSBOPS504 where it meets the formal requirements, and controls you can explain to an employer, with the test results behind them.

Prove whether an improvement is worth the investment.

Next Horizon has $100,000 to spend on AI and ten ideas competing for it. You work out which ones deserve the money.

Sound familiar?

  • Projects approved on enthusiasm, not figures.
  • Savings claimed but never measured.
  • No one sure what the business gets back.

What you’ll do, and how

You set a financial baseline, value ten improvement opportunities and test them in an investment case workbook against two limits: spend no more than $100,000, and return at least $300,000 a year. Then you write the case and recommend which to fund, hold or drop.

  • Financial baseline
  • Opportunity valuations
  • Investment case workbook
  • Written AI investment case
  • Executive recommendation

Why it’s simple to work through

Every figure is supplied, and the workbook shows pass or fail as you go, so you can see whether your case holds before you submit it.

Useful now, and later

Putting a number on an idea is what gets it approved. It is the skill that moves people from doing the work to deciding it.

Who it impresses

  • Finance and business analysts
  • Managers who write business cases
  • Organisations weighing up AI spending
  • Not-for-profits and public bodies on tight budgets

What lasts Evidence towards BSBFIN501 and BSBSUS511 where it meets the formal requirements, and an investment case that shows an employer you can justify spending.
